FINE FOOD FARE-Culinary Delights Flavours and Traditions from the Kitchens of Hellenic Asia Minor
In the fourth edition of Fine Food Fare, you will find 164 pages of regional recipes from Hellenic Asia Minor. From Appetizers to Soup, Vegetables to Seafood and Meat, Something Sweet and Extras, there is something for everyone to try and enjoy.
Special Feasts and Traditions such as Easter, Christmas and New Year feature their own recipes, traditions and descriptions.
Many of the recipes have been passed down and preserved through the generations, as grand-mothers, mothers and daughters prepared the family meals together. The kitchen was the hub of the household and in many ways, it remains so today. It is almost impossible to visit the home of relatives or friends without being served food, beverage or both with lashings of Hellenic hospitality.
The new cover depicts the cover of an original recipe folder which belonged to Mary Angus (nee Girdis), with the central photograph of her mother, Kyriakoula Girdis (a survivor of the Catastrophe of 1922), doing what she did so well, cooking in her kitchen in West End, Brisbane.
THE RESTORATION OF THE CHURCH OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE THEOTOKOS in ALATSATA, ASIA MINOR
Marianna Mastrostamatis is the descendant of Alatsata, Asia Minor refugees who settled in Athens after the Catastrophe and compulsory expulsions of 1922.
On her many journeys to Alatsata (now Alatcati) in her adult years, she became acquainted with the town and its growth in the modern era. One of the buildings which remained after the Catastrophe was the Greek Orthodox Church of the Presentation of The Theotokos.
In the hands of the Muslim population, this building became their house of worship-a mosque-with the colonnade enclosed to become various shops.
This short publication describes, in Greek and English languages, how one woman's vision became a reality. Along with progress photographs of the restorations, the story reflects the determination of character so predominant of Hellenic Asia Minor refugees; to succeed in challenges which may be placed in our paths of life.
The 90 YEAR
COMMEMORATION OF THE 1922 CATASTROPHE OF SMYRNA, ASIA MINOR’ The
refugees who made a new life in West End, South Brisbane, Queensland
Over 90 Years ago in a country that no longer exists, Asia
Minor (Anatolia), certain events transpired that changed the course of
history. In the wake of ‘The Catastrophe’, The League of Nations (United
Nations) organized the first compulsory exchange of populations in modern times. This exchange was between the Christians in Asia Minor and the Muslims in
Greece.
Few people know that genocide was occurring around the same time and around the
same place as the ANZAC Campaign of WWI at Gallipoli.
Eyewitness accounts from survivors, American Diplomats,
foreign aid workers and newspaper reports on ‘The Catastrophe of 1922’ have
been used to illustrate the epic proportion of this event.
In a time of great adversity, hope was not lost. These courageous people looked
abroad for a better life. The refugees who came to Australia from the early
1900’s established an Asia Minor community in West End, South Brisbane.
They began a new life in a new Country – Australia.
This publication includes 40 colour
pages of maps and various photos of the first Asia Minor Greek migrant
refugees and much more.
